Nicknamed the “Palmetto State,” South Carolina has been at the forefront of American history.  South Carolina was one of the original Thirteen Colonies, as well as the first state to secede from the Union during the Civil War.  It has seen destructive wars, coastal storms, the evils of slavery and civil rights struggles.  So many South Carolina stories reflect these challenges: the ghost of the Gray Man who warns of hurricanes, the ruins of post-Civil War reconstruction in Charleston, or the dangers of frontier life.  While South Carolina has seen economic progress and robust tourism in the 21st century, many of its stories remind us of a turbulent past shared with much of the South.
